About me
Hello & welcome to my blog, I’m Soniane and I want to create a safe and calm kitchen learning experience…
Many of us share both unique and familiar experiences with food. I hold dear memories of family gatherings, where I found myself seated in my auntie’s kitchen, peeling vegetables or skewering BBQ meat in preparation for a lively birthday party. There were also those delightful moments of baking cakes with my mum for party favours or being on onion-slicing duties with my papa – the list of cherished kitchen memories is extensive.
However, what stands out for me are the quieter moments in the kitchen. It’s during these times that my papa, cousins, aunties, or grandparents and I would seamlessly fall into a quiet, rhythmic flow of cooking, each session bringing new recipes and techniques to light.
My initiation into the kitchen occurred at a tender age. Every step was deemed crucial in the culinary process, whether assigned as the designated rice washer, enduring the tears induced by peeling onions, or embracing clean-up duty.
As time passed, these kitchen moments became scarce. Senior family members passed away, people moved away, and life unfolded unpredictably. It’s challenging to seize such moments.
In my 20s, I adopted a more intentional approach to cooking, recognizing the speed at which life progressed. Many of us born in the diaspora, miss out on these experiences. We find ourselves part of a melting pot of cuisines, exposed to us through friendships formed at school, work, and beyond. These friends share their home cuisines, flavours, and traditions, creating a rich tapestry of culinary experiences.
This blog aims to embody that melting pot, a fusion of flavours and recipes that celebrate the diversity of our culinary journeys.
